Making Moving Easy For Seniors!

Moving is a subject that will change in the eyes of the beholder.

Meaning, based on a person and their lifestyle, the option to move may be acceptable because they have the resources (i.e. time, health, money, etc.) that make it an easy choice for them…but that’s not the case for everyone, especially seniors.

The Challenge of Moving For Seniors

In 2016, Statistics Canada identified seniors as the least likely group to move out of the general population.

Why? For seniors moving brings about an entirely new set of challenges and obstacles that goes unforeseen from the general public eye.

Why Are Seniors Less Likely to Move?

Many seniors face difficulty trying to move for a variety of reasons:

  • The time you must invest to find a new place.
  • The organizationwork, and labour in packing and transitioning.
  • The healthy state you need to be in to make repairs and clean.
  • The knowledge of the market and how to set up a successful listing.
  • The work required to settle into a new living space.
  • The lack of assistance from family and friends to help with the process, and more.

After living in your home for many years, the thought of moving out can be overwhelming. No matter how stressful these elements may seem, they should never deter you from moving.

The Danger of Not Moving!

Staying in a home not suited to your needs can become both increasingly hazardous and financially costly. Your health, money, and happiness may be in jeopardy without the proper help.

Recently, seniors made up one of the largest groups at risk of being unable to meet the standards for housing listed in Canada’s core housing needs.

What Are Core Housing Needs?

Core housing needs refer to how Canada determines if a household needs assistance to renovate or move.

A household is in core housing need if its housing does not meet one or more of the determined adequacyaffordability or suitability standards.

Adequacy → Does not require any major repairs.

Affordability → Costs are equal to less than 30% of total before-tax household income.

Suitability → Follows NOS requirements by having enough bedrooms for the size and composition of a suitable resident household.

Why Should You Move?

Moving will allow you to avoid the risk of falling within core housing needs and sets you up in a better position in your later years.

When people retire and choose to live off their savings, there is less income to rely on. Having the right help in moving could enable you to save and make more money in the process.
